At 2:00 P.M. Dec 21, 2010, Professor Pan Guang, gave an excellent speech entitled “Clashes and dialogues of civilizations in
globalized world” at administration auditorium in Shanghai University. Prof. Pang Guang is director of shanghai world history
society, research fellow in European and Asian school, shanghai social science institute, supervisor of ph.D. students, and
director of shanghai Jewish studies institute. This lecture is one of a series of lectures designed by Centre for Global Studies
at Shanghai University. The lecture was hosted by director of the Centre Prof. Guo Changgang. The speech includes 5 parts.
First, he points out that the human civilized history is a process to learn from other’s advantage to offset one’s weakness and
to seek common points while reserving difference, thus diversity is the nature of world civilizations. Next, he gave a detailed
analysis of religious extremism in political and economic sense. Third, he explained how we should understand Samuel Huntington’s
clashes of civilizations. Fourth, He addressed the issue of international migration. Finally, he explains how education works in
promoting inter-cultural and inter-religious communication.
